Shared Histories

Shared Histories by John Tāne Christeller

This is a past Exhibition that is no longer showing – see a list of our current Exhibitions here

Numerous battles have been fought over land ownership, some in a series of battles grouped together known as The New Zealand Wars. Through wood block prints and original poetry, in English and te reo Māori, this exhibition tells the stories of the ordinary and mundane places where these battles were held and where men, women and children died – places often driven past every day without knowledge and reflection.

The book that accompanies this exhibition hopes to encourage people to visit these often obscure and hidden sites, reflect on what they meant to New Zealanders then and now, and to correct the imbalance remembered of those who fought and died, both Pākehā and Māori.

Shared Histories will exhibit in the Thornton Gallery at the National Army Museum Te Mata Toa from 14 April 2023 until 20 November 2023.
