Happy 45th Birthday To Us!

Today, we are 45!

We officially opened on 15 October 1978 with guests including the Governor General, Sir Keith Holyoake, the Prime Minister of New Zealand, the Right Honourable Sir Robert Muldoon, and actor Clive Dunn who played Corporal Jones in the famous TV series “Dad’s Army”.

Today’s celebration is more low-key, with staff gathering in The Mess Tent to enjoy some birthday cake, that included a replica/representation of our Centurion Tank on top (poppy yarn-bombed barrel and all). Thank you to all staff, past and present, for your hard work and dedication. Our museum strives to meet and exceed the vision set forth 45 years ago, to tell the stories of the NZ Army, to protect and preserve our artefacts and collections, and to connect our visitors with New Zealand’s military heritage. None of that could be done without you. So, thank you, and happy birthday!

Tomorrow, we’ll wrap up the birthday weekend celebrations with a look at a special artefact in our collection, a commemorative plate gifted to our museum’s namesake.
