Many New Zealand soldiers set off overseas on what they believed to be a great adventure. They collected souvenirs to show those back home where they had been. Many of the commemorative objects available to soldiers were produced by the local people who lived in the villages and towns our NZ troops passed through. This embroidered cloth commemorates the war on the Western Front in France from 1914-1918, in which the Somme was one of its bloodiest battles.
